IGCSE English Literature

Aims

The IGCSE in English Literature qualification enables students to:

  • Engage with and develop the ability to read, understand and respond to a wide range of literary texts from around the world
  • Develop an appreciation of the ways in which writers achieve their literary effects 
  • To develop the skills needed for literary study
  • Explore, through literature, the cultures of their own and other societies
  • Find enjoyment in reading literature and understand its influence on individuals and societies

Content Summary

  • IGCSE English Literature comprises one mandatory component and a choice of an additional examined component or coursework option.

    Whether the student takes the examined or coursework option will be determined by the teacher for each cohort.

    Component 1: Poetry and Modern Prose

    The focus of this component is:

    Section A – Unseen poetry: explore how writers create meaning and effects in a range of seen and unseen poetry.

    Section B – Anthology poetry: develop skills to compare a range of poetry given by EdExcel examining board. 

    Section C – Modern prose: explore how writers create meaning and effects in a range of modern prose texts.

    Students will study two set texts for this component. 

    Component 2: Modern Drama and Literary Heritage Texts

    The focus of this component is:

    Section A – Modern drama 

    Section B – Literary heritage texts.

    Students will study two set texts for this component: one of the modern drama set texts and one of the literary heritage set texts.
