What is holistic education?

Holistic education focuses on developing the whole child, by focusing on the intellectual, emotional, physical, and spiritual dimensions of the individual; it concentrates on the well-being of people, their self-consciousness as well as interrelation with the surrounding world. In contrast to traditional education methods, where the public school system leaves out the complete development of the child’s characteristics and personality, holistic education aims for a balanced and harmonious growth alongside academic achievement.

Holistic Education in Islam

Holistic education can be traced back to Islamic principles that acknowledge the need to educate the whole person. Islam stresses the development of an individual who is balanced and integrated such that he focuses both on life in this world and the hereafter.

Education in Islam espouses the creation of strong moral character. It helps to cultivate value systems of honesty, kindness, justice, and compassion towards others.

Incorporating these values into the curriculum motivates the students to embrace them and in return apply them in their daily lives.

Holistic education, based on an Islamic foundation, attaches oneself with the Quran and and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

The Quran is undoubtedly a religious guide which educates regarding everything pertaining to life. Incorporating the study of the Quran and the Sunnah (the teachings and practices by the Prophet Muhammad that comprises what he said, did, his approval, his disapproval, his silence, and everything that pertains to his lifetime) ensures that the trainees attain an all-inclusive knowledge on Islam and its readings. Moreover, holistic Islamic education entails mindful thinking with a more comprehensive understanding of knowledge. Students are encouraged to be exploratory learners in respect of various disciplines and make integral connections between them. 


Islamic Tarbiyah for complete development

Islamic Tarbiyah focuses on building a strong spiritual connection with Allah through prayer, thoughtfulness and remembrance.

For Muslim parents, it is the creation of strong moral character that represents wholesome development. It entails inculcation and synergy of Islamic virtues such as patience, thankfulness, modesty and gratitude as well as other precious characteristics. Role of Quran and Sunnah in the holistic education

In due time of learning the Holy Book, students are exposed to all the different angles in life and hence acquire a better and more holistic understanding of life and striving for the Hereafter.

The Sunnah provides a roadmap for the conduct of Muslims in personal, social and professional life. The Sunnah reveals to the students the model character traits, habitudes, and ways of conducting their lives that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) displayed so admirably that Muslims they can imitate to live righteously before Allah. 



Holistic education, as nurtured in Islam, embraces general and comprehensive ways which will strengthen the all-round potential of students by developing a character that helps children to succeed in this life and the next.  With Islamic tarbiyah, Muslims will be able to utilize integrated Islamic teachings, values, and practices that develop confidence, self-esteem and encourage good actions.

As much as remote education has its array of challenges, it also presents an opportunity for the holistic education through innovative approaches. Education is a learner-centred process and relies on sound principles and inspirational instruction. Islam brings together academic and non-academic aspects of education in a harmonious way to facilitate a balance in holistic growth. It is such holistic education through, Islamic Tarbiyah, that will bring an environment for students to reach their potential and make a difference not only to their lives but society in general.
