Character at the Heart of Education: A New Paradigm for Individual and Global Success

This innovative concept, known as “Character-Based Education,” is gaining awareness and offering a novel perspective on what it means to be truly educated in today’s world.

Character-based education is rooted in the belief that the conventional education system, with its rigid ‘self-centred’ themes may equip students with pursuing worldly or material success on an individual level, but will not equip students for the complexities and challenges of life. ‘Life’ on our planet does not focus on one person, but rather, on communities. Character-Based Education – or Tarbiyah – promotes a practical approach to learning as demonstrated by the Messenger of Allah (saw), prioritising the well-being of each student and society as a whole.

The philosophy behind Character-Based Education is both simple and profound: education should extend beyond the acquisition of academic knowledge and skills to include the cultivation of happiness, health, and overall character development. This approach acknowledges that a fulfilling and balanced life is the result of both intellectual growth and emotional and physical well-being.

At its core, Islamic Character Education is characterised by safeguarding the rights of one another as well as fulling the responsibilities towards others, based on the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah. It represents a servitude mindset that embraces opportunities provided in the community, family, and friends. It involves seeking experiences that enrich learning and applying innovative strategies to achieve more effective results. 

Whilst Dr Roger Welsh categorises Character-Based Education by “Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes” encompassing exercise, diet and nutrition, time in nature, contribution and service to others, relationships, recreation, relaxation and stress management, and religious or spiritual involvement, Islam propagates the Sunnah of the Prophet (saw) encompassing life-changing experiences which benefit entire societies beyond just an individual or a group of people.

Islamic schools should try and put themselves in a position to provide an outstanding education, creating a balance between Quran, Sunnah and knowledge of subjects that will support them with successful career paths which will help students obtain the Pleasure of Allah (swt).  Palm Global Academy has been working hard to produce a programme that supports a holistic development of students, bringing Islam to the heart of its Character-Based Education by exploring various ways to integrate it into students’ daily learning routine. The student’s educational journey is diverse and dynamic, encompassing Quranic learning and understanding with traditional subjects like mathematics and writing, as well as unconventional areas such as exploration of the countryside and nature while picking up survival skills.
